The Norns are goddesses who spin the threads of fate for humans and gods. Their names are Urdr, Verdandi, and Skuld—past, present, and future. The Norns govern fate (örlög); they foresee it, decree it, and pronounce it. The length of a person’s life is also determined by the Norns. As guardians of the Fenris wolf, they ultimately decide the fate of Ragnarök, the end of the world.

Die Nornen sind Göttinnen, die den Schicksalsfaden der Menschen und Götter spinnen. Sie heißen Urdr, Verdandi und Skuld - Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft. Die Nornen verwalten das Schicksal örlög, erspähen, verhängen es und sprechen es aus. Auch die Lebenszeit des Menschen wird von den Nornen bestimmt. Als Wächterinnen des Fenriswolf entscheiden sie letztlich auch über den Weltuntergang Ragnarök.
